Support & well-being
Display Screen Equipment (DSE)
The University policy on the safe use of computers (Display Screen equipment) can be found here - Display Screen Equipment (DSE)
Training for computer users is provided by Cardinus. All staff who use computers should visit this site, familiarise themselves with the content and modify their workstation accordingly; they should also carry out a self assessment using the form included at that site. Any problems should be directed to your DSE Assessor.
If your DSE assessor is unable to provide a solution to support your needs, your manager should submit a referral to the Occupational Health department.
More information on DSE assessment can be found at https://www.hse.gov.uk/msd/dse/
Eyesight testing
Occupational Health issues vouchers for a free Display Screen Equipment (DSE) eye test to eligible staff (see below). The issue of this voucher is conditional on testing being carried out at the University’s chosen optician, Specsavers.
To obtain your voucher, please send an email to occupationalhealth@lboro.ac.uk and confirm the following information:
- That, as part of your role, you are a PC user (DSE) at the University
- You have not had an eye test here in last 2 years
- Your staff number
- Your Department / School
- Your staff contract is for 12 consecutive weeks or more
The University currently has an arrangement with Specsavers – any branch across the country.
You are emailed an evoucher. Either print out the voucher and take it with you on your visit, or alternatively show the email attachment to the Specsavers store assistant using your Smartphone. The evoucher is for a full eye examination and a £45 pair of glasses or contribution towards glasses if prescribed, specifically and solely for VDU use. The evoucher also gives you the added benefit of receiving a £20 discount off glasses from the £99 range and above. No further action is required from yourselves regarding the finance element from the University and your department are not charged.
Occupational Health will not reimburse eye testing costs for employees who choose to use a different optician. Retesting will usually be allowed every 2 years, except in exceptional circumstances.
PhD students are not covered by the DSE policy and therefore cannot usually claim a voucher. If they have a contract of employment as a Bought in Teacher then they may be eligible but must confirm first with their supervisor/ line manager that DSE use is part of their duties.
