Research and Innovation Office Training Programme

We offer a range of courses for academic and research staff led by Research and Innovation Office colleagues.  

How to book

Please make your bookings via MyHR. Once in MyHR, you need to:
 
  • Click on Learning on the left of the screen
  • Click on the Courses tab
  • Type in the first few words of the course title
  • Select course and book your place

All courses will be delivered via Teams, with the exception of The Proposal Peer Review Process Process and Response to Reviewer Comments which will be run in-person.

How to Apply for a Mid-to-Senior Career Fellowship

  • Understand the key points to consider when writing a Fellowship application and typical application processes, including interviews
  • Learn about different fellowship schemes
  • Learn from a Mid / Senior Fellowship Holder at Loughborough
  • Learn about how to present yourself and your research project and how to demonstrate your overarching research vision

This course will run on Thursday 17 November 2022, 10.00-11.15am.

Intellectual Property and Commercialisation Awareness

This course will help you to understand:

  • the different types of IP, and how we protect IP and commercialise your innovations
  • the commercialisation process that we follow, and how we potentially take the innovations to market
  • what support is available from the University

This course will run twice on:

  • Tuesday 22 November 2022, 9.30am-12.00pm
  • Thursday 18 May 2023, 1.00-3.30pm

An introduction to the UK funding landscape

  • Understand the funding landscape for research activity in the UK
  • Receive an introduction to the main funders that Loughborough academics apply to
  • Learn about the different rules and applications systems for the key funders

This course will run twice:

  • Thursday 8 December 2022, 10.00-11.00am
  • Monday 6 March 2023, 2.00-3.00pm

How to Apply for a Postdoctoral or Early Career Fellowship

  • Understand the key points to consider when writing a Fellowship application and typical application processes, including interviews.
  • Learn about different fellowship schemes
  • Meet a current ECR Fellowship Holder at LU
  • Learn about how to present yourself and your research project and how to demonstrate your overarching research vision

This course will run on Thursday 15 December 2022, 2.00-3.30pm.

Managing your research project

  • Develop an awareness of the different stages and elements of post-award research projects and who has responsibility for each stage / element
  • Identify good practice in managing successful research projects
  • Identify the support available to you at Loughborough
  • Understand any internal Loughborough ways of working

This course will run twice:

  • Thursday 12 January 2022, 9.30am – 12.30pm
  • Tuesday 9 May 2022, 1.00-4.00pm

Finding collaborators, and developing and managing your research proposal team

  • To understand the different mechanisms for finding new collaborators, including use of SciVal
  • Understand how to work with and manage your project team
  • Understand the requirements for different types of project partner
  • Understand how to engage with and work with industrial partners for your research project
  • Understand how to plan a strong management structure for your project
  • Consider how the team will handle any IP arising from the research

This course will run on Wednesday 25 January 2023, 09.30-11.30am.

Understanding the UKRI Panel Process

  • Gain an understanding of the UKRI Panel Process
  • Participate in a mock panel activity
  • Understand why some proposals are funded and some are not funded

This course will run on Thursday 27 April 2023, 2.00pm-4.30pm.

How to write a UKRI proposal for Engineering and Science disciplines

  • Learn about the different components of the bid
  • Learn about the different schemes that funders offer
  • Understand how budgets work including FEC
  • Understand what different funders look for and how proposals are assessed

This course will be run in two parts:

  • Part 1 will be self-directed via Learn, and will take up to three hours. Details will be sent to participants by Friday 28 April 2023.
  • Part 2 will be live via Teams, and will run Thursday 4 May 2023, 1.00-3.30pm. Please complete Part 1 prior to attending Part 2.

How to write a UKRI proposal for Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities disciplines

  • Learn about the different components of the bid
  • Learn about the different schemes that funders offer
  • Understand how budgets work including FEC
  • Understand what different funders look for and how proposals are assessed

This course will be run in two parts:

  • Part 1 will be self-directed via Learn, and will take up to three hours. Details will be sent to participants by Wednesday 31 May 2023.
  • Part 2 will be live via Teams, and will run Tuesday 6 June 2023, 1.30-4.00pm.

Please complete Part 1 prior to attending Part 2.

Business-led funding applications

  • Understand the landscape for business-led funding
  • Understand what different stakeholders in the collaboration may be looking for
  • Learn about the different schemes that Innovate UK offer
  • Learn how to build your networks to be ready for collaborative applications
  • Understand how business-led funding applications are supported by the RIO

This course will run on Thursday 8 June 2023, 10.00am-12.00pm.

The Proposal Peer Review Process and Response to Reviewer Comments

  • Understand the assessment process that peer reviewers undertake
  • Learn some techniques to use when responding to peer review
  • Avoid common pitfalls when responding to peer review

This in-person course will run on Thursday 13 June 2023, 2.00-3.00pm.

It will run on the Loughborough East Midlands campus. RIO will liaise separately with interested academics based on the Loughborough University London campus.
