Support for students

The Disability Support Team is here to support students with disabilities. We support students living with any long term (i.e. over 12 months) condition which has a disabling impact on their studies. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Long term health conditions e.g. chronic fatigue syndrome, migraines, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, arthritis, lupus, cancer survivors, hypermobility, chronic back pain
- Specific learning differences e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia
- Visual impairment
- Deafness
- Physical disabilities e.g. cerebral palsy, wheelchair users
- Autistic spectrum conditions e.g. Asperger’s Syndrome
We provide a range of information, advice, support and guidance to disabled students based on an assessment of your specific requirements. This assessment can be done by a Disability Advisor in the team, or a Disabled Students Allowance assessor and may include:
- Liaising with your department about reasonable adjustments to course delivery and assessment methods to meet your requirements
- Guidance in applying for Disabled Students Allowance
- Arranging for extended library loans and/or practical library support
- Providing 1-1 support from the study support service, mental health support team, study mentors and/or the academic and practical support team
- Offering Educational Psychologist assessments to formally identify dyslexia.
- Access to assistive software
- Adaptions to the physical environment or provision of equipment
- Advising the Student Accommodation Centre of any accommodation requirements, e.g. a fridge for storing medication.
There is no formal referral process into the Team. For initial enquiries all our contact details are to the right-hand side of this page so please chose the method you are most comfortable with to get in touch.
