Disability Office

The Disability Support Team is here to support students with disabilities. We support students living with any long term (i.e. over 12 months) condition which has a disabling impact on their studies. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Long term health conditions e.g. chronic fatigue syndrome, migraines, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, arthritis, lupus, cancer survivors, hypermobility, chronic back pain
- Specific learning differences e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia
- AD(H)D
- Visual impairment
- Deafness
- Physical disabilities e.g. cerebral palsy, wheelchair users
- Autistic spectrum conditions e.g. Asperger’s Syndrome
We work within the ‘social model of disability’. This means we acknowledge that students can be disabled by the social, procedural and attitudinal barriers in society and therefore we work to remove these barriers. The emphasis of the support we provide is on working with students to develop practical support and strategies to enable them to deal with the obstacles they may encounter during their academic journey.
The Equality Act 2010 defines disability as a long-term conditions, which lasts or is likely to last over 12 months, and which has a substantial and adverse effects on someone’s ability to undertake day-to-day activities. The Act gives disabled students protection from discrimination and the right to request reasonable adjustments as a result of their disability.
